Festival "Iluzije Slobode" has existed since 2009, built upon the ideas of community, tolerance, trust, and genuine goodwill. Born out of the enthusiasm of just a few people, the festival has gradually grown into something far greater than a local music event.
Over the years, “Iluzije Slobode” has become a meeting point for different generations of bands, artists, activists, and everyone who believes that alternative culture still can — and must — exist outside the imposed rules of the market, without sponsorships, projects, large-scale productions, or marketing campaigns. “Iluzije Slobode” was built by the people who continue to support it year after year through their work, presence, and solidarity. The festival nurtures the principles of DIY culture: independent and self-sustainable organization, mutual support, creative freedom, and an open space for authentic expression. Because of this, “Iluzije Slobode” is not merely a stage and a series of concerts, but a community grounded in tolerance, equality, friendship, and resistance to everything that divides people, alienates them, and turns them into passive observers without reaction. The audience at Illusions of Freedom is made up of people who have their own voice. There is no distance between performers and audience, and there are no headliners among the performers, because everyone at the festival shares the same status. Through its program, atmosphere, environment, and messages, the festival has become an important point on the map of the regional alternative scene, gathering bands and visitors from different cities and countries. Even today, its essence remains the same — rooted in the idea that culture can emerge from the ground up, among people, without imposed hierarchy.
Through its name, “Iluzije Slobode” does not represent an escape from reality. Quite the opposite — the entire story surrounding this festival stands as a loud response to the reality that surrounds us. The word “Illusions,” sounding beautiful and abstract, is in fact a middle finger to a system trying to convince us that everything must be driven by material interest. The word Freedom (intentionally written without quotation marks and with a capital letter) serves as a reminder that different kinds of relationships between people are possible. At this festival, one can learn a great deal about how a community can truly function for the sake of a pure idea, and that some things are still built solely out of love.
